Get Organized Part III: Your Month

Jan 27, 2023

As anyone who’s been following me for more than a minute knows, there’s nothing I love more than a good organizing project.  The new year is a perfect time to get your systems organized in your interior design business!  If you’ve been running around playing whack-a-mole with your chaotic to-do list, always feeling behind on your overwhelming design projects, you’re going to love this 4-part blog series where I’m going to show you exactly how to get your design process, your projects, and your calendar organized.  By the end of this series you’re going to be feeling refreshed and much more in control of your time and your interior design projects!

If you missed our first two weeks of the series, CLICK HERE to read week 1: Organizing your Process, and CLICK HERE to read week 2: Organizing your projects.  This week’s post builds on those earlier two, so you’ll definitely want to check them out!

This week, I’m excited to talk about organizing your month.  When we organize our month, we start FIRST with our time off and free time, and then plan our projects around that.

That way we can take off as much time as we need to have Designer Sanity without getting behind on our projects.

Sound good?  Let’s get started!

So the first thing we want to do when planning our month is to fill in our calendar with all of our time off.  Do you have some travel planned, or do your kids have some days off school?  If you’re reading this as this blog posts live,  President’s day is coming up in February, and perhaps you want to plan a trip for that long weekend.

Planning ahead means you can plan your month around your time off without getting behind on your projects and enjoy the time off guilt-free - win!

Once you’ve marked all your time off on the calendar, you’re going to want to calculate how many hours you have available to work each week.  What’s typical for a regular week, and how do you need to adjust this for the weeks where you’re taking time off?  Mark in your capacity (how many hours you have available) for each week now.

Next, take out the week-by-week project plans you created in the last blog post (HERE) and write in your goals and time estimates on the calendar for each week..  If you followed this step, this should be a quick and easy process.

Add up the time estimates for all your projects and check that total against your capacity for each week- have you given yourself enough time to complete the work?  If not, you may need to go back and adjust your project plans.  Remember - you start with your time off first and then plan your projects on your calendar around that - not the other way around!

When you’ve completed these steps, you’ll have your whole month planned out and organized like magic.  You can look ahead and see what will be happening on each of your projects each week and plan ahead with your clients.  Best of all, this plan works with your planned time off, so you can enjoy it without getting behind on your projects - guilt free.  This is the best gift of all.

Can you imagine having your calendar this organized?  It’s truly life changing.

Give this process a try, and if you feel like you’d like some more support and guidance (and worksheets!), you’re definitely going to want to check out my Design Roadmap Course HERE.  It gives you everything you need to get your process, your projects and your calendar organized and under control in your interior design business.
