Beautiful design alone isn't enough.

Most interior designers are highly creative.

But very few were ever taught how to structure a design project from beginning to end.

 Without a clear system:

• projects run on scattered emails

• decisions happen out of order

• contractors get frustrated

• clients lose confidence

• designers feel overwhelmed

The Design Roadmap System creates a clear plan that everyone can follow.

.

How I discovered this

I once completed a kitchen addition with a design I was incredibly proud of. The client loved the design itself. The space turned out beautifully. But the project  still represented a low point in my career.  Why?

My process was disorganized. My drawings were late which delayed the project and alienated the contractor.  My fees went way over my original estimate which frustrated the client.  Despite the beautiful design, I didn’t receive a single referral from that project.

That experience forced me to face something I had never been taught as a designer:

Being a good designer isn’t enough.

Interior designers are responsible for guiding complex projects with many moving parts. Without a clear process, even great design can lead to stressful experiences for everyone involved.

That realization led me to create the Design Roadmap System — a system that organizes the entire design process so clients, contractors, and vendors always know what happens next.

When I began using this system in my own firm, everything changed.

Projects ran more smoothly and on budget.

Communication improved.

Stress dropped dramatically.

And referrals started flowing again.

What is the Design Roadmap System?

A simple way to organize every design project.

The Design Roadmap answers three key questions:

1. What are we going to do?

TASK LIST

Your clear, milestone-based process — from kickoff to completion — designed around how you actually work.

2. How long is it going to take?

TIME ESTIMATES

Realistic time frames based on capacity, not wishful thinking or pressure from others.

3. When is it going to happen?

TARGET DATES

Your plan, placed onto a real calendar — including vacations, life, and client availability.

When all three live together, in one clear view, something important happens:

  • Decisions are made ahead of time
  • Expectations are visible
  • Progress becomes measurable
  • Stress drops — because nothing is floating in your head

This is what most systems miss.

They separate these elements across tools, software, and documents — which means no one actually uses them.

The Design Roadmap System brings them together in one simple, visual plan that you, your team, your client, and your GC can all understand at a glance.

It’s clear and simple: two tools working together

The Design Roadmap

A clear project plan everyone can follow.

The Design Roadmap lays out the phases, meetings, decisions, and deliverables for each project in a simple week-by-week format. Clients, contractors, and your team all know what’s happening and what’s coming next.

No confusion.
No surprises.
Finally — everyone on the same page.

The Master Calendar

A bird’s-eye view of all your priorities — starting with you.

Your Master Calendar begins with your real capacity (time, energy, and bandwidth), then maps out your weekly focus for every project. You and your team always know what to work on, when to work on it, and how long to spend to stay on schedule and on budget.

No more overwhelming to-do lists.
No more prioritizing on the fly.

Together they give you clear control over your projects and your time.

How the Design Roadmap System Works

1. Create Your Template Design Roadmap

First, you define your standard design process — a clear step-by-step roadmap for running projects from start to finish.

You decide in advance:

• what happens
• when it happens
• how long it takes

And you tailor it to your ideal way of working, so the system supports your creativity instead of fighting it.

2. Apply It to Every Project

Next, you use your template to quickly create a Design Roadmap for each project.

Now your clients and contractors can clearly see:

• meetings
• deliverables
• decisions
• project milestones

Everything is mapped out ahead of time so everyone knows what’s happening and when.

No surprises.
No confusion.
No constant fire-fighting.

3. Run Everything Through Your Master Calendar

Finally, all of your project roadmaps get placed into your Master Calendar.

This becomes your weekly guide showing:

• what to focus on
• how many projects you're managing
• how far out you're booked

Instead of reacting to chaos, you start each week with a clear plan for your time and energy.

And because the calendar begins with your real capacity, your workload stays sustainable.

The Result

Instead of juggling projects reactively, you always know:

• what needs to happen
• when it needs to happen
• what to focus on next

Projects run more smoothly, communication improves, and the stress of managing everything alone begins to disappear
