Why You Need A Top-Down Planning System

Jun 24, 2022

How does a top-down planning system work?

It means you start with the end in mind.

When you plan out each of your projects from start to finish, you ask yourself:

  • How many weeks do I want to spend on this project?
  • What do I want my overall fees to be?
  • How many hours do I want to spend each week on this project?

When you look at your calendar and your time as a whole, you ask yourself:

  • How many hours do I want to work each week so I can have work/life balance?
  • How much money do I want to make each month?
  • How many projects do I want to work on at a time to maintain my focus and meet my goals?

Starting with these questions and planning out your projects, your work and your time based on the answers is how a top-down planning system works.  You start with the end in mind, and then fill in the details around that.

It’s completely different from how we’re typically taught to manage our workload, which is brain-dumping all of our to-dos and then putting them on the calendar.  That is a bottom up approach.  How long will the project take, and how much will it cost?  Nobody knows.

Our typical bottom-up approach is like following breadcrumbs on a trail in the dark with a flashlight where you can only see a little bit ahead of you.  In contrast, a top-down approach is like designing the Roadmap in advance - seeing the entire journey and masterminding exactly how you want it all to go before you take a single step.  Can you see how different these two approaches are, and how different they feel?

This is why my system is called the Design Roadmap System.  It is all about a top-down approach where you decide in advance what you are going to do, and then plan your work from start to finish around that.  It means you make the map with a week-by-week plan for all of your projects for months into the future.  That takes all of the guesswork out of planning your weeks, and frees up ALL THAT ENERGY and creativity for the actual design part.  The actual design part!  Isn’t that where you want to spend your energy and creativity?  Hell yes!

This is truly a revolutionary way to work, and I’ve created a self-paced online course to teach you everything you need to put it into practice.  It’s called the Design Roadmap System and you can learn all about it here.

And if you've heard enough already and you're ready to get the course, you can purchase that here

Isn’t it time that you threw away that flashlight and stopped following those breadcrumbs and instead started creating your own Design Roadmaps?  Hell Yes!!
